Whimsical Landscapes

Vivid scenery with an abstract flair

May 6 - 30, 2023

Immerse yourself in scenes of psychedelic color and abstract imagery at our Whimsical Landscapes exhibition, on display from May 6-30, 2023. This show conceptualizes conventional landscape painting, asking viewers to challenge their expectations.

The exhibition features work from four artists; Lynn Goldstein and Peter Stolvoort return to the gallery, and Ann Guidera-Matey and Neelam Padte exhibit with us for the first time. The pieces in the collection are presented in oil, acrylic, and pastel.

Molly Honey King, the co-curator of Whimsical Landscapes, says of the exhibition, “Landscapes are a timeless genre of art. With this show, we wanted to subvert that tradition and showcase these views as surreal and otherworldly.”

Lynn Goldstein has exhibited her work widely, won various art awards, and has collectors throughout the US and Europe. Her art is created to help people find solace and feel peaceful in our modern world. She is best known for her vibrant works that draw inspiration from nature and the passage of time. For Whimsical Landscapes, Lynn displays images in both oil and acrylic that are realistic in form but with elements of abstraction that draw viewers into her off-kilter environments.

Ann Guidera-Matey has been working with pastels for approximately 35 years and has her studio in Aston, PA. Her landscapes evoke the feelings of harmony and balance found in nature. Glowing light, deep hues, and visual texture invite observers into Ann’s world where you can pause, take a deep breath, and savor the moment. The artist’s pastel works are intensely saturated with fiery blood oranges, strong violets and pinks, and electric teals. Her striking palette immediately captures the gaze of any onlooker.

Born in Mumbai, India, Neelam Padte quickly discovered her creative spirit and developed a keen interest in various art forms. She earned a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Mumbai before emigrating to the US in 1984. Neelam’s acrylic landscapes are constructed through minimalist compositions with large swaths of exaggerated color and subtle texture. She is inspired by earth, water, wind, fire, and space as viewed through the prism of her soul. The bold shapes within Neelam’s work make her’s the most abstract of the collection.

Peter Stolvoort graduated from the Hussain School of Art in Philadelphia, studying painting, printmaking, and design. Peter draws inspiration from the works of Jackson Pollack and Mark Tobey. The fluidity of his acrylic paint allows Peter’s pieces to flutter with movement. A zoomed-in view of his work may show a chaotic scramble of pigment, but taking a step back reveals the beauty of a sculptural landscape.
