Susan Shalowitz

Having practiced various forms of artistic expression personally and professionally throughout her life, Susan began painting in 2008, and curiosity quickly turned to passion. After years of attending classes, she completed a three-year Master Artist program at the Compass Atelier in Rockville, Maryland in 2017. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group juried shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Susan draws inspiration for her oil paintings predominantly from the beauty of the natural world. Nature's complex design, with its many contradictions, is a constant source of fascination. Much of the focus of Susan’s work in recent years has turned toward her lifelong affinity for water and its endless allure. This work often revolves around her connection to the beach and more specifically, the beauty of ocean waves. Most recently her exploration has expanded to also include the study of those birds that spend their time in and around water.

In her highly realistic yet painterly works, Susan’s intention is to echo nature's contrasting rhythms, and to translate with paint, the sense of connection to her surroundings that the natural world provides. Her palettes and brush strokes change in response to Nature’s fleeting moods and according to the spirit of the moment being captured.
