Karash Payne grew up in the Washington DC area and currently divides her time between Bethesda, Maryland and Rehoboth, Delaware. A former high school biology teacher, then stay at home parent, she began painting when her children were in school and she needed a creative outlet. Payne began taking community classes, then went back to school to learn old master techniques. Since graduating from the Compass Atelier Master Artist Program (Rockville, MD) in 2016, she has shown my oil paintings in exhibitions and galleries in DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware.
Through her work, Payne explores the concept of change through the transformative lens of water. She places her figurative subjects in, on, and under water where they both emerge from and are swallowed by the water. Their forms are revealed and dissolved in an elegant dance between flesh, fabric, hair, and water. Water has always been a powerful cipher in Karash’s life. She grew up around the water and was a competitive swimmer, lifeguard, and avid scuba diver. As she raised her children in and around the ocean, bay, and pools her own connection to water grew. Now as her life enters a new phase the water returns as a symbolic and elemental agent of change.
