Throughout history, women have suffered within the bounds of a patriarchal society, as their creativity and individuality have often been overlooked and undervalued. But the female empowerment movement has forced standards to shift, especially within the art community, giving women a voice to rewrite their narrative and representation in art.

   For our May exhibition, we have organized a show that challenges the male gaze by giving female artists the opportunity to use their vision to capture what it actually means to be a woman.

​

   "I Am Woman" invites five women artists to interpret femininity, through both literal and figurative means, allowing them to express the depth of a woman’s identity. Brook Hedge focuses her camera on the female form to investigate the symbolic essence of femininity. The ladies in Brenda Kidera’s portraits are placed in contrasting environments, communicating the holistic diversity of female personalities. Chloe McEldowney, a first-time exhibitor here at Peninsula, conveys womanhood through whimsical, naturalistic designs of vivid colors and abstract floral patterns. Sydney McGinley’s soft pastel works express the gentle femininity of women experiencing quiet and introspective moments. Whereas, Nancy Richards West’s oil and Sumi-e pieces bring to life females with both relatable and mystical personas.

   This show is of great importance to us and our gallery, as it speaks to our mission of encouraging equality and diversity in the art world. We're ecstatic that we can put on an all-female exhibition that shows the depth of individuality and the strength of their artistic ability.
